A*STAR Marblar Challenge - crowdsourcing to help invesntors create the next big things

A*STAR Marblar Challenge.
Announcement by European-based crowd sourcing platform.

Kickstarting the commercialization of Singapore’s science

Today we’ve got a pretty exciting announcement for our Marblars: While you’ve been feasting on a lot of exciting technologies from the Anglo-Saxon world, we’re now making the jump to the orient with our partnership with ETPL, the technology transfer arm of Signapore’s A*STAR research institutes.

Our first competition featuring one of their technologies launches today: We’re featuring a really clever microfluidic passive mixing device, which is now looking for some interesting problems to solve. Head over to the competition page http://marblar.com/challenge/Micro-mixer to find out more, leave your thoughts and take your shot at the $1000 prize courtesy of our good friends at the Royal Society of Chemistry.

So why are we so excited about this partnership? Well, first of all, A*STAR and ETPL are fantastic organizations, A*STAR producing some of the finest science around and ETPL with a great track-record of creating real-world applications from this through their hands-on approach to tech transfer. Our favourite of the 40-odd spin-outs they’ve created in recent years is a company called Nanovue: The clever folks at A*STAR have figured out to retrofit glasses-less 3D capabilities to mobile phone screens by designing a 0.1mm-thin screen comprised of hundreds of thousands of nano-scale lenses.  So with cool technology like this coming our way, how could we not be excited? And more importantly, you’re going to be the ones sinking your teeth into the competitions we create around these, so you should be positively giddy with anticipation!

Keep your eyes peeled over the coming months for the remaining five A*STAR competitions, but for now check out the nifty microfluidics gadget we’re starting you off with.
